This year is the 52nd edition of the Transpacific Yacht Race or “Transpac”- a 2200 mile downwind sailing race from Los Angeles to Waikiki. Which is essentially the equivalent of sailing from New York to LA. The race was originally conceived by King Kalakaua in 1886 and is typically held biennially on odd numbered years. Sailors dedicate their lives to this race and boat owners have been known to put up half a million or more to compete for the win. However, the goals and types of boats that enter can range greatly. Some boats have white leather and nightly wine pairings while others are carbon fiber builds with a freeze-dried fed crew. But no matter what boat these guys are sailing, the test that it puts on their physical and mental being is the challenge most seek. When you’re halfway to Hawaii, you are the furthest point from land in the world. And although all the competitors look out for each other, you really are alone out there, rarely seeing another boat for the duration of the race.
For those whom haven’t experienced the race or after parties, it is hard to describe. The Yacht Clubs flood with sailors and families from all over the world and race boats line the docks of the Ala Wai Harbor. It is the pinnacle of yacht racing here in the Eastern Pacific. It takes an army of people to welcome everyone, and get the Clubs set up for an event like this. There are over 60 boats already entered to start racing on June 27th. From there it is 3 weeks of festivities 24/7 so come down and be a part of it. Yellow Brick has a mobile tracking app for the fleet of boats as they race and there are a bunch of ways to get involved.
