Hawaii Yacht Racing Association

The Hawaii Yacht Racing Association (HYRA) is the coordinating body for the majority of yacht racing events conducted in Hawaii. HYRA coordinates Hawaii's yearly yacht racing calendar for all member Yacht Clubs encompassing all adult, junior, women, and national events. Their primary mission is to promote offshore yacht racing throughout the State of Hawaii.

Although each Yacht Club may hold their own regattas, the HYRA calendar is comprised of 10 regattas scattered around the Islands in which the racers of the various Yacht Clubs come together to compete. This summer provided some great downwind conditions for the two major interisland races on the calendar- the Kauai Channel Race and the Lahaina Return Race.

The Kauai Channel Race begins inKaneohe Bay, Oahu and is a non-stop sail to Nawiliwili Harbor, Kauai. The fleet experienced broken rudders, torn sails, and a number of gear failures in the harrowing 25 knot winds and 8 foot seas. The fastest boat sailed the 95 mile course in just over 10 hours.

The Lahaina Return Race is an 80or so mile course from the West Side of Maui back to Ala Wai Harbor, Oahu. The competitors have the ability to sail either the North or South coast of Molokai on the way to the finish. This is one of the most vibrant races of the year with the highest number of entries. Most of the competitors opted to take the route down the North Shore of Molokai which is a quite a sight to see when all the colored spinnakers sails are dotting the horizon.

There are cruising divisions for those sailors that don’t wantto race, yet want to sail the course and be part of the action. Hopefully wewill see you out there next year! Racers from all harbors and islands arewelcome to participate. Reach out to the HYRA commodore, Michelle Garcia, toget more info on how to partake! mgarcia808@gmail.com
